What a trash truck loader does
A trash truck loader is a knuckleboom crane with a grapple, mounted on a truck behind the cab or at the rear of a dump or roll off body. The operator picks up the load with the grapple and drops it in the body, so one person clears a curb pile that would take a crew by hand. Public works departments, waste haulers and storm debris contractors use grapple trucks for:
- Bulk waste and curbside collection: furniture, appliances and white goods
- Yard waste, tree brush, limbs and logs
- Storm debris cleanup after hurricanes and tornadoes
- Illegal dumping on roadsides, ditches and right of way
- Land clearing, demolition and site cleanup debris
- Scrap metal, pipe and pole handling
The same loaders go on stationary pedestals at transfer stations, scrap yards, recycling plants, saw mills and quarries, where they feed a hopper or load trucks from a fixed platform.
